JAMES BOND was joined by over 40 Brownies, Guides and Rainbows as they thanked the Mayor of Spelthorne for donating £4,500 to Girlguiding. The girls, who were joined by lookalike Douglas James, were representing over 1300 members of Girlguiding Spelthorne at Shepperton Studios, in Studio Lane, on Monday, 17 May.

They were at the studios to thank Councillor Caroline Spencer MAYOR for her donation of £4,500 which will be used to support activities and camps for girls aged five and upwards.

Caroline who finished her year term as Mayor 20th May 2010 chose Girlguiding as one of her charities to support She also supported One to One, a friendship scheme in Spelthorne for people with learning difficulties.

Girlguiding UK celebrates its centenary this year.

Assistant leader of the 7th Ashford Guides and Girlguiding county chair of marketing and information Rachael House, said: "I was overwhelmed at the amount we are receiving, which will particularly help families who struggle to pay for the opportunities that Guiding offers.

"Guiding could not exist without the hard work of volunteers, and we are always keen to involve more volunteers to give those girls waiting to join the opportunity to become members of Guiding."

Staines Lammas Band gave a concert at St Peter’s Church, Staines, on Sunday 28 March in the presence of the Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Caroline Spencer;

the concert’s proceeds were in aid of the Mayor’s designated charities and St Peters Church Staines.

Glenn Hayter, the band’s musical director, presented a varied programme of music designed to suit all tastes. As suggested by the band’s President, Deputy Mayor Councillor John O’Hara, the first part of the concert featured showstoppers including music from Oklahoma, Les Miserables and Mary Poppins, concluding with a stirring medley of themes from James Bond films. The second half of the concert included a wealth of well-known tunes and songs from World War II, including some of Glenn Miller’s finest and most famous melodies – conducted by Glenn Hayter resplendent in a US Army Air Force uniform similar to that worn by Major Glenn Miller during the war.

Generous applause – and calls for an encore which were fulfilled by a rousing performance of the famous theme from BBC TV’s Dad’s Army – suggested that the audience had appreciated their afternoon with the band. The band’s musicians certainly enjoyed entertaining them.

Sunbury Scouts Visit Fire Station to Complete Fire Safety Badge, Mayor of Spelthorne, Caroline Spencer extinguishing a chip pan fire using a Chubb Fire Blanket.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s Sunbury Fire Station played host to two parties of local Scouts, visiting the station to complete their Chubb Fire Safety badge with a live fire demonstration. Due to large demand, the demonstrations were split into two sessions, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, each lasting around two hours.

The badge requires Scouts to understand what causes a fire, how to call the Fire Brigade, how to understand fire blanket and extinguisher usage, as well as fire safety for the home. In addition to a tour of the station led by Station Manager, Alan Grant, nearly 70 Scouts from the 1st Brookwood, 6th Staines (Christchurch), 3rd Hampton, SL Oatlands, East Sheen, 7th Feltham Sea Scouts and 3rd Teddington Scout Groups participated in the live fire demonstrations from Chubb Fire Training Officer Kevin Farnborough, in order to complete their badge qualification.

Mayor of Spelthorne, Caroline Spencer was in attendance at both sessions to meet the Scouts and present them their certificates, alongside Nick Bolton, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s Education Officer.

To date, more than 74,000 Scouts have received the Chubb Fire Safety Badge, making it one of the most popular of all scouting badges. In 2007 Chubb Fire renewed its three-year sponsorship deal with The Scout Association, including the provision of new educational literature and posters, to more than 7,200 local Scout Troops across the UK, as well as practical help from the company’s nationwide network of offices and engineers.

Jane Garland, Chubb Fire’s Marketing Communication Manager, explains: “Our expertise in the field of fire safety means that we can really offer The Scout Association some practical assistance in running the scheme. Each year our engineers service over four million extinguishers in the UK and we are keen to get involved in working with the Scouts and the community on a local level.”

Jane added: “The importance of fire safety simply cannot be emphasised enough, it is a sad fact that almost 13,500 people are killed or injured each year in fires in the UK, which very often are preventable. The Fire Safety Badge offers the Scouts some invaluable advice on fire prevention, detection and escape routes should a fire break out, so it is great to see so many young people participating in this badge, and hopefully taking away some vital knowledge to help keep them safe from fire in years to come.”

Mayor Looks to the Future Success of Brooklands College

Mayor Caroline Spencer spent an afternoon at Brooklands College, Ashford Campus last week visiting staff and students and learning new skills from the construction and hair and beauty departments.

The Mayor, who is delighted Brooklands has secured the funding needed for the redevelopment of the Ashford site, got her hands dirty in the construction department when students, studying for their diploma in construction, gave her a beginner’s lesson in bricklaying.

David Barker, Head of Construction said ‘The Mayor did a fantastic job for her first time at bricklaying and I was very proud of my students who have come along way since they first started at the college last September.

Mayor Caroline Spencer later enjoyed a tour of the Hair and Beauty salon and was treated to a manicure and wash and blow dry by Brooklands Hair and Beauty students.

The Mayor commented ‘It is fantastic news that the Ashford Campus is remaining open and will be redeveloping and up-dating its facilities for the future. It provides a vital service to young people and adults in the local community, giving them the opportunities they need to train and develop for a brighter future’.

The Mayor along with Sarah Kennedy from Ashford library later launched the College’s ‘Back to the Future’ competition. The college is celebrating a promising future by taking a look back at its long and changing history.

Mayor Caroline Spencer gets Man of The Match Ball

INSTEAD of the match ball being given to the man of the match, at the end of Ashford Town's last home game it was given to the Mayor of Spelthorne.Councillor Caroline Spencer was in the stands for the team's 3-2 win against Hastings United at the stadium in Short Lane, on Saturday, March 13.

After the match Mrs Spencer was handed the match ball, signed by every player, which she will auction to raise money for her children's charities, One to One and Guiding.

Caroline, said: "There's no better way to use spare time than watching a local football match on a lovely Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Ashford Town FC for making me feel so welcome and to the other players for signing the match football which will be auctioned in aid of my Mayoral charities."

Cllr Spencer recalls highs of Mayoral year

Staines News 20 May 2010Spelthorne Mayor Caroline Spencer is to hand over her chains of office her successor at a ceremony on Thursday.

Cllr Spencer who has spent a year in the post has made hundreds of public appearances to support local charities and businesses.

She has also taken part in some interesting activities including being dragged across Heron Lakes in a rubber ring and having her photo taken riding a motorbike.

She spoke of her time in the job, saying: “It has been wonderful, really wonderful, there are just too many things to single out and say that was the best bit.”

Mrs Spencer, only the 7th female mayor since 1974, has also been a bit of a girl power pioneer, not only setting the example as a fantastic role model but by choosing Guides and Brownies in Spelthorne as one of her mayors charities, she said: “Their motto is Girls In The Lead, which I think is right.

“The reason I chose them as a charity is because in the past male mayors have frequently supported scouts, sea cadets and other boys groups.

“I thought it was about time the girls had a go.”

Cllr Spencer chose One2One as her other charity which is a friendship organisation for the mentally and physically handicapped. She said: “The work they do is invaluable, it is such a caring organisation. They help people with difficulties integrate into society in a way that makes them appear no different to anyone else.”

It would be difficult to find a Spelthorne resident who hasn't met, or been moved by this bubbly larger than life character.

In a letter congratulating the mayor of her time in office, one resident said: “On the many occasions you have attended a public event, you have taken the time to talk to people and leave an impression on them. Public figures just lately have taken quite a bashing and you have gone a very long way to changing that. I hope the people of Spelthorne realise just how lucky they have been in this last year in having you as our mayor.”

Cllr Spencer plans to continue being a councillor for Ashford East where she lives and has decided to set up her own marketing and PR business in Staines.

She will be succeeded by Staines ward councillor John O'Hara.

Cllr Spencer said: “Councillor O'Hara will be a totally different mayor to me, I think the role of mayor will go back to being more traditional.”

La femme Laser and Beauty Clinic celebrated their Thirtieth anniversary on nineteenth May with the help of some very special guests.The Guests included Mayor of Spelthorne Cllr. Caroline Spencer, (this was one of the Mayors last engagements of her Mayoral term), Nina Wadia, Local Piers Brosnon 007 Lookalike Douglas James the evening showcased the advances in Laser technology and all of its applications. The celebrity guests and a selection of existing clients enjoyed a fun evening wishing the owners Ia and Rini Mukja, who took over the business in 2005 all the very best for their continued success.
